Roberts artistic sensibilities were being formed as early as he took his first steps. Born to a British Father and an Iranian Jewish mother, Roberts fascinating heritage was formative in shaping his unique personal and artistic perspectives, taking their cue from two aesthetically inspiring cultures. Roberts artistic process has been informed by his own personal quest to express the conflicting aspects of the two worlds which created him, both aesthetically and emotionally. For Robert art is an organic force. The sinuous lines of his drawings attest to Robert’s belief that he is the conduit, not the creator. Robert’s canvasses are a working diary of his thoughts and emotion, which he allows to guide him, rather than imposing a heavy-handed order on his ideas. He likens his artistic process to decoding a message, following signs and symbols from the world around him; or to putting together a puzzle formed of the words and images that form the fabric of daily life. In Robert’s hands, everything becomes art: ‘mistakes’, misspellings, impulses and observations. Robert is driven by the need to explore his own life, and to uncover the currents of truth beneath the surface of human experience. Guided by emotion, expressed through intricacies of colour and design, Robert’s art is a dialogue with the frustrating, glorious, awe-inspiring complexities of life.
